About us

Hibernation Stoves & Spas has been installing and servicing wood, gas, and pellet stoves, fireplaces, and hot tubs along Highway 4 since 1977. We're a small, owner-operated crew, so you'll work directly with the people who run the business. We work in cabins, second homes, and full-time residences across Calaveras County and the surrounding areas, with occasional jobs in Alpine, Tuolumne, and Amador counties. We run the business on clear systems, written checklists, and pay that rewards clean work instead of fast work.

What you'll do

You'll be trained into a full service technician and installer role. You'll start by shadowing our lead technician on service calls and installs, learning our procedures job by job. You won't be sent out on your own until your training is complete and you've been signed off.

  • Run service and repair calls on stoves, fireplaces, and spas: cleanings, chimney sweeps, diagnostics, part replacements, tune-ups, water care
  • Work installations alongside the crew: stoves, inserts, venting and chimney systems, hearth pads, hot tub deliveries and setups
  • Load, deliver, and set heavy equipment safely with lifts, dollies, straps, and a second set of hands
  • Complete a photo closeout checklist in the Jobber app on every job before leaving the site
  • Keep service vehicles clean, organized, and restocked after installs
  • Cover the showroom as needed: customer questions, phones, scheduling, stocking shelves
  • Break down crates and packaging and keep the warehouse dumpster area orderly

Who we're looking for

  • Reliable. At the showroom, clocked in, ready to go at 9:00, every day. This matters more to us than experience
  • Mechanically inclined and comfortable with hand and power tools. You bring your own basic kit (cordless drill and driver, socket set, driver bits, wrench set); we provide all specialty tools
  • Able to lift and carry 75 lbs repeatedly and team-lift heavier equipment
  • Comfortable on ladders and roofs, in attics and crawlspaces, and in mountain weather: snow, heat, and smoke days
  • Valid California driver's license. A DMV record check is required before you drive our service vehicles
  • Comfortable using a smartphone app for checklists, photos, and time tracking
  • Takes pride in clean work and treats customers' homes with respect
  • Wants to learn a trade and grow with a company that's growing

Nice to have, not required: hearth, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or construction experience; NFI certification. We train the right person.

How we work

We're a small, tight-knit team of professionals, and we run the crew the way we'd want to be run.

  • Mistakes get fixed, not hidden. Report it the same day, fix it properly, and it becomes a checklist line so it doesn't happen twice. Nobody gets chewed out for an honest mistake. Hiding one is a different story
  • Professional on the crew and on site. No yelling, no cussing, and respectful language every day, including the hard days. Assume you're on camera in every customer's home, because you usually are
  • Show up ready. On time, in a company shirt, with the truck stocked and organized. The customer's first impression of us is you pulling into the driveway
  • Clean work, clean site. Floors and furniture protected, everything swept up, and the site left cleaner than we found it. A job isn't done until the checklist and photos are
  • Safety over speed. Roof work, gas appliances, and heavy lifts are done by the book, with a second set of hands when the job calls for one. The bonus is for the checklist-verified job, not the fast one
  • Customers are neighbors. Up here, they literally are. We explain the work in plain language and we don't upsell

If you've worked for a contractor who runs his crew by yelling, you'll notice the difference in the first week.

Pay and growth

We pay hourly for every hour worked, plus a flat production bonus on every completed, checklist-verified install and service call. Bonuses are pinned to your title and paid weekly with the following week's paycheck. Base pay for this position ranges from $20 to $24 per hour by title and certification; bonuses come on top.

Title Hourly Per install Per service call Average hourly with bonuses* How you get there
Trainee $20 $85 $10 about $25 Day one
Service Tech $22+ $170 $20 about $32 Complete Travis Industries service training and sign off on our core procedures, typically 60 to 90 days, based on skills, not the calendar. Install sign-offs by type (inserts, ZC fireplaces, freestanding stoves, hot tubs) as those jobs come up
Service Lead $24+ $230 $25 about $37 Operations ownership and training responsibilities. We promote from within

*Average assumes about 8 installs and 15 service calls per month over 173 hours. Actual pay varies with season and job mix.

  • Paid holidays when they fall on a scheduled day, paid time off, and California paid sick leave
